Cyanoacrylate glue is the industrial name for what is commonly known as quick-drying glue, universal glue, three-second glue, instant glue, 502 glue. They can be used to combine anything from metal to plastic and even human skin.
Instant glue was invented by American inventor Harry Coover when he was working at Kodak, and it was mass-produced and listed in 1958. In 1964, Ge Zengbei of the Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences developed and invented KH502 glue based on ethyl cyanoacrylate, so the universal glue is often called 502 in mainland China.
Cyanoacrylate adhesives (also called instant adhesives or super glue) cure (harden) by reacting to very small amounts of moisture present on the surface of the substrates. That’s it – no ovens, no mixing, no specialty curing equipment – they simply cure from the residual moisture naturally occurring on the surface of the components. They are popular for household repairs, crafts, and small-scale applications.
