Bond strength can be said to be the most important indicator to measure the mechanical properties of adhesives, and it is also the most valuable reference factor for purchasing adhesives. Bond strength is just a general term. When we test the bond strength of adhesives, we mainly test and identify the three aspects of shear strength, tensile strength, and peel strength. Next, let's talk about the testing knowledge of shear, tensile, and peel strength of adhesives.

Shear strength and tensile strength are actually the maximum load capacity of the adhesive joint parallel or perpendicular to the adhesive surface. Most of the adhesive shear strength tests are conducted on single lap structures, but according to the test method of ASTMD3528, double lap shear tests can be used to balance the force, thereby reducing the impact of peel stress and splitting stress in single lap tests. The tensile and shear strength tests of adhesives are all conducted together.

 

Peel strength is mainly used to measure the 180-degree peeling resistance of adhesives, and is mainly used for the bonding of flexible materials and rigid materials. Usually, the distribution of stress, peeling angle, and thickness of the adhesive layer are the main factors affecting the peel strength test of adhesives. When measuring the peel strength of adhesives between metal materials, the uneven pull-off strength test method is usually used.

 

Bond strength is of great significance to whether the adhesive can reliably bond two or more materials, the same or different. Shear strength, tensile strength and peel strength, as the three key factors of bond strength, can well reflect the mechanical properties of the adhesive. Therefore, understanding these three aspects of knowledge has a positive effect on both the production and application of adhesives.
